“Altamira Lodge is one of the best Airbnb stays we've ever had. It truly stands out as a special place - the location at the edge of the one of the world's best wine-growing regions with the mighty Andes mountains and Tunuyan river in the background, an authentic farm house set in an idyllic, large wooded garden and updated with good taste and attention to details, and a host who went well beyond the call of duty to make us feel welcome, explain every detail, and help us get the most from our stay. Though my family and I now live in California, our roots are in Argentina and its beautiful farmlands. I can tell you this is an authentic experience of that culture and place - for those who are looking for that, it doesn't get better than this. It's a direct reflection of the fact that this property has been in Gabriela's family, who are a well-known wine growing family from the region, for several generations. And it shows. It's impossible to "create" from scratch that kind of history and sense of place. It's rare for an outside visitor to be invited to truly experience this, even if only for a few days. Each night we cooked on the outdoor BBQ with the traditional method, which is to make a wood fire to make embers that you can cook with three different methods: the traditional grill, of course, where we cooked Argentina's famous beef but also roasted vegetables and mountain stream trout, and also the brick oven and the iron stew pots. It takes more time than a gas grill or starting with a bag of charcoal briquettes, but if you are on vacation why would you be in a hurry. Best to take the time to talk with family and enjoying an appetizer in the glow of the fire. We ate outdoors in the garden, admiring the quiet and peace of this place with an amazing canopy of stars above us (no nearby lights from towns or cities to blot out the stars), and tasting the daily "catch" of Malbec's, Syrah's, Cabernet Franc's, and other wonderful discoveries from the nearby vineyards. It's the country, so there are bugs, but no mosquitoes or stinging varieties, so that was not an issue. Though in the peak of summer with temperatures over 90deg by mid-afternoon, the constant breeze at this location was a blessing. And of course the wonderful swimming pool, surrounded by trees to provide partial shade, was there to cool off at all times. We swam in the morning, afternoon, and at midnight each day. The house itself is simple and tasteful. Gabriela has impeccable good taste and pays attention to all details. The house has all the amenities one needs. Since Gabriela also operates a fantastic hotel near Mendoza (Finca Adalgisa), the sheets, towels, etc. are all top notch. The beds were comfortable. We slept each night with the windows open (there's bug nets on the windows) to let the breeze in. The bathrooms and showers all worked well, with nice hot showers. In summary, we highly recommend Altamira Lodge. It will make for an unforgettable vacation for those who truly want to experience this region of Argentina.”
